Romania Program Details
Accommodation and Food
You will be staying in an independent house within the host organization’s compound where you will share a room with other volunteers. Rooms have an en-suite shower and toilet, and most rooms also have a balcony. There is a communal kitchen and dining room as well as patio area which in summer is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. This living arrangement gives you the chance to meet other volunteers who you may not be working with directly and to interact socially with other guests. Three meals are provided per day and all volunteers are volunteers requested to help with the preparation and cleaning up of meals as this frees up the staff to do their allocated jobs. All meals will be served in the volunteer house or on occasion with the children in their dining room.
Insurance, Health and Safety
United Planet provides emergency medical insurance for all of its Short Term volunteers. You receive policy information by email prior to departure, and also the emergency number to call if you are treated for any medical issues. Insurance also covers baggage loss up to $500 and trip interruption due to extraordinary circumstances.* Upon sign up you will also receive a full guide to health and safety in your country. We recommend booking a doctor’s appointment a few months out to update your vaccinations, etc. or visiting a travel health clinic. Your doctor can recommend the appropriate vaccinations and travel medicine. Please see the Health and Safety page for more information.
Transportation and Flights
Volunteers fly into Otopeni Airport in Bucharest, Romania and from there will be collected by a United Planet representative and driven to the organization which is approximately 2 1/2 hours away. Please note that all volunteers must arrive on a Monday between 9am – 9pm and also depart between 9am-9pm. Volunteers who arrive after 9pm and depart before 9am, will need to make arrangements to stay in Bucharest overnight.
Tips on how to find an inexpensive flight can be found in our Cost Savings 2010 guide.
Start Dates
Programs start 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.
It’s not all about hard work in Romania! Volunteers will get the chance to participate in different cultural activities inside the village and learn more about Romanian life and culture. On weekends, explore near-by Transylvanian castles including the Dracula's Castle excursion. Although no knowledge of the Romanian language is required on this quest, volunteers are offered about 2-3 hours of Romanian lessons per week.
