Country Information
Experience both natural and cultural diversity in Ecuador. Considered a microcosm of South America, Ecuador boasts over 12 distinct bio-diverse zones and multiple ethnic groups. The Galápagos is not all Ecuador has to offer. Ecuador’s Incan heritage is reflected in the many historic buildings in the south of Quito and the mysterious Ingapirca ruins. You can make weekend trips to the jungle, relax in cabins in the cloud forest and hike around crater lakes, all while staying in Quito. Our program includes visits to nearby hot springs and indigenous markets (depending on your length of stay). You won’t even have to exchange money—Ecuador adopted the dollar in 2000 to stem inflation. However, the population still suffers from high prices and low wages and roughly two thirds of Ecuadoreans live below the poverty line. As a volunteer in Ecuador can either support kids from low-income families in South Quito or protect Ecuador’s wildlife by identifying flora and fauna in the cloud forest (Nanegal).
