Volunteer in Ecuador

Experience the sights and sounds of this microcosm of South America – Mountains, jungles, beaches, ancient ruins and the Galápagos Islands are just a few of the most sought-after destinations to visit while volunteering in Ecuador. Wandering cobblestone streets and exploring 17th-century monasteries can give you some insight into the complex history of this beautiful country. Ecuador’s natural and cultural diversity and ancient Inca heritage appeal to many volunteers. In spite of tremendous economic progress in the last few years, Ecuadorians are still working to reduce poverty and improve the standard of living for much of the country.

As a United Planet volunteer in Ecuador you have many outlets to get involved. United Planet has ongoing opportunities for you to work with children from low-income families at a day care or center for children with special needs, to serve at healthcare centers in areas like nursing or rehabilitation, or to volunteer with environmental or wildlife protection groups.

United Planet also offers long-term (6 months and one year) volunteer abroad programs and virtual volunteering and virtual internships (1 month to 6 months) in Ecuador.  Learn more about all of our volunteer abroad programs and virtual volunteering and virtual internship countries and projects in Latin and South America.

One Questions Video with United Planet

Our Ecuador Country Coordinator, Pablo Proano, shares how United Planet volunteers in Ecuador will experience a new culture, a new language, and the sights and sounds of microcosm of South America.

What I enjoyed most about my Quest in Ecuador was getting to know so many genuine, compassionate and kind people throughout my trip. From the pre-departure support in Boston to the Country Coordinators, to other United Planet volunteers, to tour guides, to local Ecuadorians, and, last but not least, my host family, I was touched by such a warm and collaborative environment overall. I had never experienced such a beautiful thing on such a large scale before.

Volunteer Voices

Upon returning home to the U.S., United Planet volunteer Ivan felt overwhelmed by the wide roads and open spaces.

“This Quest really changed the way I look at things now, and seeing a different way of life helps me appreciate what I have back home. Traveling abroad opens your eyes and opens your mind to new things. Also, it helps you to be grateful for what you have and helps you realize the world is bigger than you think.”
– Ivan, United Planet volunteer.

Health and Safety

United Planet provides emergency travel and medical insurance for all volunteers. All Ecuador staff members participate in extensive health and safety training, and are available at all times by 24-hour phone line. Upon enrollment, you will receive a full emergency contact list. In addition, we register all of our volunteers with US Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). We recommend booking a doctor’s appointment or visiting a travel health clinic a few months out to update your vaccinations. Also, we have been monitoring the situation with Zika virus in Ecuador. The mosquitoes that spread Zika do not survive at elevations above 6,500 feet due to environmental conditions. Because all United Planet programs in Quito are at high enough altitudes, Zika does not pose a threat for United Planet Ecuador volunteers.  Read more about health and safety.

Transportation and Flights

Due to varying airline prices, United Planet does not arrange or cover the cost of flights to and from Ecuador. However, we arrange all ground transportation to and from the airport in Ecuador and will ensure that you arrive safely at your host house. Public transportation to and from your project is cheap and easy with either of Quito’s two trolley lines or by bus. Daily commuting costs are covered by volunteers.
