A First Visit to Japan – Reflections from a Journey of Culture, Connection, and Community

April 11, 2025United Planet

Travel has always been a cornerstone of my work with United Planet, but this March, I had the unique joy of joining a student group from Valley Christian High School on their 7-day Quest to Japan—my very first time in the country. I’ve organized many of these journeys from afar, but experiencing it firsthand, immersed in the vibrant culture and deep-rooted traditions of Japan, reminded me of why we do what we do.

From the moment we arrived in Okazaki City, we were warmly welcomed with open arms, thoughtful smiles, and a cultural richness that greeted us at every turn. Our first day set the tone with a visit to Okazaki Castle and a historical tour that gave us a glimpse into Japan’s Edo-period heritage. Standing in such a storied place, I could feel the connection between past and present—an anchoring theme of the entire week.

One of the most touching parts of the trip came early on, during a student’s birthday celebration. A surprise cake, joyful singing, and the simple yet profound gesture of our in-country coordinator Naoko’s hospitality made the day truly unforgettable—not just for Zach, but for all of us. It was a beautiful example of how meaningful cross-cultural connections can be, even in the smallest of moments.

Later that day, we were dressed in traditional yukatas and participated in a Japanese dance lesson near the castle. Watching our students giggle while adjusting their obis, posing with handmade floral hairpieces, and trying their hand at delicate fan movements, I was struck by how much joy can come from honoring traditions different from our own. The dance, themed around the Aoi cherry blossoms, felt poetic and grounding—a shared moment of grace in motion.

We had the opportunity to attend Mass at a Japanese Catholic Church, a site where we later volunteered by cleaning the outdoor irrigation system still used in the town. It was hard but meaningful work—while it would’ve taken the older staff much more time and effort, the 26 of us were able to manage it in just a few hours.

We also explored Japanese artistry and sustainability through visits to a traditional drum-making company and the Miyazakien Tea Farm. Learning about taiko drums from a sixth-generation artisan. And at the tea Farm, we had our second fear of service, harvesting green tealeaves. We learned the traditional processes for producing and brewing our own matcha. After we got our hands a little dirty it was fulfilling to experience firsthand the patience and pride embedded in every cup.

A much-anticipated visit to a Japanese 7-Eleven was made, and plenty of laughter shared in guesthouse common areas. These in-between times often brought the most connection: shared reflection over miso soup, impromptu karaoke, and even a deep appreciation for bento box variety.

The students grew so much from volunteering at a local kindergartens, learning calligraphy and other customs such as bowing in greeting. We saw them step more fully into global citizenship—adaptable, compassionate, and open-minded.

For me personally, this trip was a reminder of the magic that unfolds when we step outside our comfort zones—not just as travelers, but as service-learners and listeners. To our hosts, our students, and our new friends in Okazaki—thank you for this unforgettable journey. My first trip to Japan with United Planet will certainly not be my last.
