United Planet and the ICYE Federation
| The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service. United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements. | ![]() |

The United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the UK, is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. The UK currently ranks as the fifth largest economy in the world, and was the world’s first industrialized country. It is a Constitutional Monarchy and the royal family remains popular and at the forefront of national affairs. Home to Shakespeare, the Beatles and Loch Ness, there is much to explore in the UK whether you are drawn to city nightlife or quiet farming towns. Volunteering in the UK will allow you to experience the way of life from a local’s perspective while working with those who find themselves on the fringe of society. |

Volunteer Opportunities in the United Kingdom (6 or 12 months)
The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community. |
| Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year: 1) People with Disabilities – Volunteers work in homes or centers that provide care and activities for people living with disabilities. The work varies from project to project, but in general includes a combination of direct care and organizing leisure and educational activities. 2) Working with the Homeless – Volunteers become friends, mentors and assistants for homeless people in local communities. Volunteers’ work helps them to develop personal skills that allow them to become less dependent on others. Tasks can range from listening and shopping to, preparing workshops. 3) Social Work – Volunteers teach classes for young people from low income families or assist people living with mental or physical disabilities. The goal of this work is to enhance the quality of life for these individuals.
