“I experienced a beautiful country and its culture with people who lived there. The chance to participate in the local way of life made the experience unique from my other travels.” - Irene, United Planet Volunteer in Uganda. |
United Planet and the ICYE Federation
| The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service. United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements. | ![]() |

This nation has some of the most diverse wildlife ranging from the endangered mountain gorilla to the chimpanzee. With a large number of ethnic communities, Uganda is also very culturally diverse. While on the road to recovery from its devastating economic past, Uganda still faces many social problems which welcome volunteers’ input. Volunteer Opportunities in Uganda (6 or 12 months)
The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community. |
| Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year: 1) Education Projects – Volunteers work with children and young people, encouraging them to stay in school through the creation and execution of workshops such as language classes, computing, sports, drama or music. The goal is to help these young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to further their education and personal development by gaining key skills and undertaking vocational training. 2) Social Projects – Volunteers assist children from a variety of disadvantaged backgrounds including rescued child laborers, abandoned street children, disabled children, children from troubled families, those who have suffered abuse, and orphans. Volunteer tasks may include assisting in fundraising, supervising play, and developing activities and workshops. 3) Homeless Projects – Homelessness in Uganda is often caused by poverty, health problems or lack of education. Volunteers assist staff at local organizations with the maintenance of households that receive homeless young people. Tasks may include listening and interacting with the youth as well as starting activities and workshops in conjunction with the staff. 4) Environmental Projects – Volunteers work with local organizations to promote ecological education through the running of conservation awareness seminars. Examples of possible volunteer projects include running recycling projects and education through art and computing classes to encourage young people to preserve the environment. Volunteer Accommodations Volunteers live with host families. Are you interested in volunteering in Uganda? Read more about Uganda Volunteers for Peace - ICYE Uganda! |
