Turkey Volunteer Quests
Volunteer in Turkey: 4-12 weeks

"It was an amazing experience! You'll learn about one of the most ancient cultures and at the same time you'll help amazing kids in Istanbul. You'll also feel a warm environment around you and your host family will always make you feel at home. Yes, of course, we can try to change the world... but before doing that we gotta change ourselves through this strong life experience. That's what makes the difference!"

-Maurizio Brodrero, Short-term volunteer in Turkey

United Planet's Quest Volunteer Abroad program offers you or your group a life-changing opportunity to interact with local communities through customized work experiences, cultural activities, and home stays.

Country and Community Information

Turkey is a unique country spanning both the continents of Europe and Asia and Istanbul is often considered a bridge between continents and cultures. Turkish culture is very unique; Turkish art is almost synonymous with Ottoman art.   One can easily see intricate motifs on Qurans or miniature paintings commissioned by the Sultans in addition to beautifully decorated mosques everywhere in Turkey. The image of the famous Blue Mosque in twilight is one of the best known images of Turkey, but the country can offer you a lot more. Thanks to the long history of Turkey and their tolerance to others, diversities of culture and layers of different characters of time and ethnic groups are an endless surprise. If you pay attention to small streets, you will find Turkey’s rich history, Byzantine, Ottoman and even pre Ottoman Muslim era. In addition, lifestyle in a big city like Istanbul, can be just the same as any modern Western city. The uniqueness of Turkey is eclecticism.

Despite it continual development, Turkey still faces economic and social hardships. Turkey has many orphaned and homeless children, on average 40 children are abandoned each day and the number of families that have to give their children to foster care has risen drastically in recent years, from 8,000 to 34,000. Existing childcare organizations do not have the capacity to cope with this increase and as such the quality of care and education of the children is deteriorating. This means that there are also many children living on the streets in Turkey, in Istanbul there are over 1,500 children living on the streets and the figure nationwide exceeds 6,000.

Volunteer Opportunities in Turkey (4-12 weeks)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organization, living with a host family, and excursions and cultural activities. United Planet is working currently with different volunteer opportunities in partnership with local organizations in Turkey.

1) Social Work Quest (minimum stay 4 weeks)
Volunteers work in a neighborhood 5-10 minutes from Taksim Square, one of the busiest squares in Central Istanbul. Volunteers spend your time helping the children and women at a social work center in a poor and ethnically diverse area. The center reaches out to about 150 children and women per week. Volunteers should be ready to plan activities and lessons for the children. This is a challenging yet very rewarding work placement and volunteers need to be prepared to take the initiative and use their creative side!

 The duties are:

  • Working with children-You will be playing with the children, teaching music, drama, painting and English. Extra skills like making crafts or playing musical instruments are useful for this project.
  • Working with women- you would be working with women, educating them about reproduction health and other female health issues. In addition to this there is also the opportunity to work on craft projects with them, such as woodwork. Knowledge or experience with women’s health and other skills such as craft making are welcomed for this project.

2)Youth Work Quest (minimum stay 3 weeks)

Volunteers work in a community center on the Asian side of Istanbul, a mixture of old residential areas and lively markets. Volunteers spend their time at the community center helping children (ages 6-14) strengthen their educational skills as well as social and psychological well being. Volunteers are expected to to prepare workshops and lesson plans in advance. Subjects available to teach are varied, and include English, math, drama, music, arts and crafts and more. No language requirement.

3) Summer 2009: Youth Quest

Work with Turkish and international volunteers at a community center on the Asian side of Istanbul. Volunteers will help at the community center teaching English, art and crafts, music, sports and more! This Quest is only open for four weeks in July 2009 to 18-25 yr old volunteers.

Language Requirement:
While no knowledge of Turkish is required, it is always useful to know the basics before you come. The social workers whom you will be collaborating with will always make a real effort to understand, and there is generally always someone around that will be able to translate for you if there is a need.  United Planet will also provide some basic Turkish lessons during your Quest.

  • Turkey Quests run year round and start on the first and third Saturday of each month
  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age unless accompanied by an adult

The Quest takes place in Istanbul, and therefore provides many cultural learning opportunities, through living with a host family and interacting with local communities. United Planet also provides excursions and cultural activities, such as Turkish language lessons and visits to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia. For more information on excursions, prices and details for the Turkey Quest, please visit Turkey Prices and Details.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit nearest travel clinic prior to departure.

Living and volunteering in another country, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
