What makes a United Planet Long-term Quest unique?

United Planet’s Quest volunteer abroad programs are 100 % cultural immersion experiences. Long-term Quest volunteer opportunities begin in August and January of each year and areavailable to U.S. and Canadian residents of all ages and skill levels.

Country Information

Located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is landlocked between Austria, Germany, France and Italy.  Switzerland is perhaps best known for its political neutrality and its highly effective political process.  It will no doubt leave a deep impression with you after living in the glorious Alps, the lush forests, or the alpine meadows. During your time volunteering in Switzerland, while enjoying the calm atmosphere in this beautiful country, you will have an opportunity to explore this rich culture and work with local organizations to address community needs.  Find out for yourself why people around the world love this wonderful country!

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

For six months to one year, you can experience a life-changing program in one of over 30 countries across the globe. United Planet is the U.S. and Canadian member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) Federation , founded in 1949.  Through their vast network and 60 years of experience, United Planet and ICYE offer a wide range of programs for volunteers from around the world.


Who can apply?

Volunteers must be 18 years of age to participate in the Switzerland Quest. United Planet can send volunteers who are citizens of the United States and Canada or those who are currently living in the U.S. and Canada.  Citizens and residents of other countries must contact the ICYE partner in their home country. United Planet can send people from any country to our Short-term Quest locations for 1-12 week programs.  Some of our short-term volunteer placements can be extended for longer stays.  Please contact us for more information about volunteering with United Planet.

Social projects in Switzerland

Social Projects

Volunteers work at a school or an organization that works with children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. These projects aim to provide their inhabitants with family-like surroundings, close contacts, as well as advance their development and sense of security. Volunteers assist in various types of classes as well as take care of the children.

People with Disabilities

Volunteers work with physically and mentally disabled adults at a center that aims to empower its members by helping them become more self-sufficient, dispelling prejudices and providing activities for them to do that involve the local community. Volunteer tasks typically include assisting the residents in daily activities such as washing, eating, going for walks, cleaning and helping during swimming lessons.

Working with the Elderly

Volunteers provide these individuals company, a listening ear, and assistance with getting around to various daily activities. This project gives you the chance to learn about Swiss society from those who know it the best.

Cultural and Administrative Projects

Volunteers assist in a cultural center with tasks such as taking phone calls, office work and organizing cultural events. It is also a great opportunity to assist immigrants in understanding their new home.

Volunteers help with administration work to support the staff at local radio and theater organizations. Volunteers are required to speak fluent German.

Volunteer Accommodations

Volunteers in Switzerland live with host families. When not available, an independent living situation may be arranged.

Three Easy Steps to Apply

Step 1: Choose your Volunteer Abroad Quest Country and then fill in the online application.

Step 2: Submit your $350 deposit at the time of application. You may pay the deposit online with a credit card as part of your application process, call our office at 1-800-292-2316 to provide your credit card information or send a check to our Boston office.

Step 3: The Long-term Coordinator in the Boston office will contact you to arrange a phone interview.
