Volunteer in Sweden: 6 or 12 months

“ This experience was definitely a great new experience for me! This trip was the perfect balance between hard work and fun!”

- Erica, United Planet Volunteer

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.   ICYE logo

Country Information

Sweden sits in Northern Europe and boasts a high standard of education.  In addition, it is home to one of the longest life expectancies in the world and the highest representation of women in government. In many respects Sweden is a country of relatively small class differences. On the downside, unemployment, shortage of housing and other social problems are more common today than they used to be.  Volunteering in Sweden is your chance to explore a beautiful part of the world while contributing to local challenges.  You will feel at ease in your new environment quickly surrounded by a community that is awaiting your arrival in Sweden.

Volunteer Opportunities in Sweden (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) People with Disabilities – Volunteers work with physically and mentally disabled people in local centers.  Volunteers’ tasks depend on the focus of each center and the needs of that community.   In general, volunteers assist people in school and with their everyday activities. In some projects, the people live in a community village together with staff and they work together on handicrafts, farming etc.

2) Working with the Elderly – Volunteers work with older people who live in special homes or centers with full-time staff assisting them in their daily activities. Volunteers’ tasks are likely to include assisting the residents with a range of activities and in being a helping hand for the staff.  It is important that volunteers make an effort to learn some Swedish, since not all of the residents speak other languages.

3) Drug Addiction Projects – Volunteers work in homes for youth (14-20 years old) with social problems. This project aims to prevent social exclusion, criminality and violence through a wide spectrum of pre-emptive social activities, education programs and consultation. Volunteers provide care to the youth, run programs for them and encourage them to raise their self-esteem and confidence.

4) Environmental Projects – Volunteers work on farms in Sweden in an ecologically sustainable society. Tasks may include feeding and taking care of animals or work with planting, harvesting, and everything in between. There may also be administrative work included. Some of the ecological farms have broader educational activities such as courses for the public in which volunteers may take part.

5) Camp Projects – Volunteers work in activity centers which host large groups of people – often youth. The role of the volunteers is to assist when the center hosts groups/guests. This includes working in the kitchen and preparation of the camps.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
