Romania Volunteer Quests

Volunteer in Romania

"Anybody interested in getting to know children as inspiring to me as Nelson Mandela or Marianne Pearl should think about making Romania your Quest. The children are beautiful souls who end up touching you more than you could imagine."

--Raeanna Walker, Short-term volunteer in Romania

Country Information

Situated in Eastern Europe, Romania is a country rich in natural resources as well as history and culture. The orphanage program is located in the village of Valea Screzii, a rural area in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The local way of life has changed little over the last hundred years, with horse and carts still a regular sight on the roads. Volunteers in Romania can explore this area and learn more about Romanian life by helping out in the orphanage. You can visit nearby castles and villages, and take a stab at learning a few Romanian words and phrases (lessons provided)!

Orphanage and Community Development Quest
Minimum Stay: 1 week
Volunteers Needed: Year Round
Requirements: At least 16 years old

Volunteers in Romania will spend their time in the beautiful foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The orphanage is part of a larger community which also includes families in difficulties, abused mothers, adults who grew up in state institutions, and pregnant women who have nowhere else to go. There are over a hundred children at the orphanage of all ages. Volunteers can play with the children who are in great need of care and attention, teach English, do arts and crafts, and more. Volunteers are encouraged to come with ideas for activities and games to engage in with the children.

Construction program in Romania

Construction Opportunities
Volunteers are always needed to help with ongoing construction at the orphanage. Many new houses are being constructed to accommodate the children and give them more living space. Volunteers with construction skills or unskilled volunteers willing to do manual work are always needed! The specific needs for construction work varies by time of year, so please ask us.

Health Care Opportunities
The orphanage also has a small clinic that is used for the dispensing of medicines, small injuries, and inoculations.  Due to the distance to the local hospitals and the costs, many medical complaints persist for a long period of time.  Many of these can be resolved fairly easily with diagnosis, medication, and education. Doctors are always needed to help.
