"My volunteer work in Peru changed my life. I learned so much about Peruvian culture, the friendly Peruvian people, the stunningly beautiful land, the Spanish language and I learned a lot about myself. It was such a gift to me to be there, so it meant so much to me to be able to help and give back to them." |
United Planet's Quest Volunteer Abroad program offers you or your group a life-changing opportunity to interact with local communities through customized work experiences, cultural activities, and home stays.

Peru is an archaeologist’s dream: the ruins of several ancient civilizations can be found within the country’s borders. The Incans are the most famous people to have occupied Peruvian territory. Cusco once served as the seat of Incan power. Peru was conquered by the Spanish in 1533 and gained independence in 1821. In recent history, Peru has been led by military governments and democratic, authoritarian presidents. Due to social and economic inequality, no leader’s term has been immune to political protest or social unrest. Peru has experienced record growth rates in the last five years, with trade and investment growing at double digit rates. Mining, exports of manufactured goods, and tourism have all contributed to Peru’s economic progress. Lima is growing at a record pace, while rural farmers in the southern Andes still struggle |

| to make ends meet. Underemployment is a major problem, with 11.4% of the population out of work, according to the UN. While 300, 000 tourists visit Machu Picchu every year, all of them stopping through Cusco, poverty levels in the Sacred Valley remain high. |
Volunteer Opportunities in Peru
The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local schools, social activities in the local community, and both free and guided excursions.

Many of these are included in the program fee - please see the Peru Prices and Details prices page for more information.
