New Zealand Volunteer Quest
Volunteer in New Zealand: 6 or 12 months

It was an experience unlike anything I could have imagined and was nothing like what I expected; that's what made it fun and unforgettable! I would go back in a heartbeat.

- Jordan, United Planet volunteer

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.

Country Information

New Zealand is located in the Southern Pacific Ocean east of Australia. It is made up of 2 main islands along with a number of smaller islands. With only four million inhabitants, New Zealand is one of the world’s least crowded countries.   It’s spectacularly beautiful landscape includes vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coastlines, deeply indented fiords and lush rainforests.  The Maori culture of the indigenous people of New Zealand, is still visible and celebrated in this small and beautiful country.  There is much to discover, learn and explore in New Zealand!

Volunteer Opportunities in New Zealand (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Farm projects – Volunteers may work on cow, horse, sheep or beef farms. Volunteers live with the family on the farm, giving the opportunity to experience a very different lifestyle. Daily activities may include feeding and moving animals, milking cows, driving a tractor or a motorbike and other outdoor activities.  Prepare to get dirty!

2) Health camps - Throughout New Zealand, health camps are provided for children who need special medical attention away from their own family. They may be from underprivileged homes, abusive situations or suffer dietary or behavioral problems.  Volunteers will share duties with other staff, and live on-site.  Children who attend this type of camp do have very unsettled lives and need a great deal of tolerance and understanding.

3) Social work projects – Volunteers can work with intellectually handicapped people, elderly, disabled children or disabled adults. Duties at these projects range from laundry to kitchen work, housework, care giving, and companionship for the residents and helping out wherever needed.

4) Environmental projects – Volunteers are part of teams that work at restoring, replanting and maintaining the local environment.  Volunteers will also help with educating the community that they live in as well as the wider community about the environmental situation in which they are working.  Some environmental projects will involve working with the native animals of New Zealand.

Volunteer Accommodations

Volunteer accommodations vary according to project and location.  Possible accommodations include home stays, shared housing with other volunteers or a room at the work placement.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
