Nepal Volunteer Quest
Volunteer in Nepal: 6 or 12 months

"I enjoyed being totally immersed in the culture of Nepal. Living and working with a family gave me an outlook on Nepal that I'm sure few visitors get to experience. Having the opportunity to experience life in a completely different culture, and feeling like I've helped make a small difference has been a life changing experience."

- Dan Howell, United Planet Volunteer inNepal, 2008

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.   ICYE logo

Country Information

Nepal Map

Nepal is a small yet culturally rich country with a long history; it is an amazing Himalayan country with spectacular wildlife and scenery. Nepal is famous for being home to some of the highest mountains in the world including Mt. Everest.  With its melting pot of Hindu, Buddhist and traditional culture and customs, Nepal has long been a destination of choice for those seeking adventure and excitement!  Despite its appearance as a Himalayan Shangri-La, and the friendly and peaceful attitude of its people, social and economic issues continue to plague Nepal. Approximately 40% of the population lives in poverty and the majority of Nepalis are subsistence farmers. Our volunteers in Nepal are welcomed in local communities to assist with social challenges and to engage in cross-cultural learning and dialogue.

Volunteer Opportunities in Nepal (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Education ProjectsVolunteers work directly with children in the orphanage, with most of the activities focusing on educational training for children, including English classes.  Volunteers also assist in food distribution, sanitation, helping to dress the children and other daily activities.  Volunteers can participate in health education, games, drawing, painting and other creative activities for the children’s development.

2) Health Projects - Volunteers are placed in a local health center. Volunteers assist doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff in the treatment of patients with minor injuries. Volunteers can also help with other tasks such as record keeping, sanitation and medicine distribution. This project aims to encourage the development and well being of inhabitants in rural communities.

3) Conservation Projects – Volunteers work in a village-based nursery.  Activities include seed collection, pruning, weeding, trimming, seed sowing, mulching, care of small seedlings and watering. Additional assistance on nursery related such as fencing, bed preparation etc. is also welcome.

4) Eco-tourism Projects – Volunteers complete research about local tourist destinations and how this industry affects the local communities. The volunteer writes a report based on the findings and submits it to the organization. A supervisor is provided to help the volunteers carry out the work efficiently and in line with the organizations needs and expectations.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
