Mexico Volunteer Quests
Volunteer in Mexico: 2 - 16 weeks

"My experience was so great! I met people from all over the world. I learned about a different culture and ate foods I would never have here at home. I found myself being the most independent I have ever been in my life... My host family was funny and accommodating... I can't wait to do this again in the future."

- Lisa Stokes-Daugherty - United Planet Volunteer

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation.  This Mexico Quest is offered in partnership with SIIJUVE, the ICYE
partner in Mexico.

Country Information

Mexico, with an estimated population of 109 million people, is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. Mexico is bursting with history to marvel at, beautiful coastlines to explore and is bustling with activity!  It is also one of the fastest growing industrial powers with vast cities boasting modern architecture to rival any in the world.  Despite being considered an emerging power, the uneven distribution of income, its political history and increased security issues still plague many of its citizens.  Volunteers are welcome to work along side the warm Mexican people in an attempt to improve the standard of living, one person and community at a time.

Volunteer Opportunities in Mexico (2 - 16 weeks)

1. Children - Ejército de Salvación

This project is run by a Christian non-profit organization and provides support to the local orphanage. It aims to provide food and shelter to underprivileged children, as well as to support children in their education. The project is located in an urban area in the city of Puebla which has nice weather and all necessary amenities. Volunteers’ main tasks will be focused on supporting the children – helping them with homework, playing with them, and making them feel loved.  Volunteers stay with host families in the community.

2. Children - Casa Hogar Rafael Hernández Villar

This orphanage in Puebla is home to about 120 abandoned children between the ages of 6 and 12, many of whom are from families with problems of addiction, single parent homes or with access to limited economic resources. This project aims to provide intellectual and emotional care to children that have been partially or totally abandoned by their families through providing housing, food, clothes, education, etc. Volunteers will have the chance to teach English in the mornings and help the children with their homework in the afternoons. Volunteers stay with host families in the community.

3. Children

Comamos y Crezcamos con Alegría A.C.

This non profit organization is dedicated to eradicating malnutrition, illiteracy, and health disorders for children with low economic resources. It aims to help children achieve good physical and mental development. Volunteers will serve lunch, help children with their studies and play with them.  The project is located in an urban area of Puebla.  Volunteers stay with host families in the community.

4. Children - Albergues Infantiles

This project gives volunteers an opportunity to assist in local orphanages located in urban and rural areas of Chiapas. The organization aims to give support to children who have been abused, maltreated or abandoned, as well as to their families. Volunteers can design activities to do with the children as well as assist with computer lessons, handcrafts workshops, dance and music workshops, and even educational workshops for mothers. This project requires 4 weeks minimum stay. Volunteers stay with host families or at the project.

Spanish Language Immersion Option (4 - 16 weeks)

Volunteers staying 4 weeks or longer in Mexico can choose to add 15 hours of Spanish language classes
per week to the first 2 weeks of their Quest!  Volunteers who choose this option will volunteer at their project in the mornings, then take 3 hours of Spanish classes in the afternoons.  After these first 2 weeks, volunteers will work full days at their project for the remaining weeks.

Add $175 to your program fee for this option.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the web site of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government web site. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government web site for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the web site of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit nearest travel clinic prior to departure.

Living and volunteering in another country, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
