Japan Program Details

Accommodation and Food

You will be staying either with host families or living with other volunteers and staff members at your work project. You will receive all three daily meals and will either have a private room or share a room with another volunteer or a family member of the same sex. The families and other residents are always very friendly and excited to teach you about the culture of Japan! You will receive more detail about our lodging prior to departure.

Insurance, Health and Safety

United Planet provides emergency medical insurance for all of its Short-term Quest volunteers. You will receive policy information by email prior to departure, and also the emergency number to call if you are treated for any medical issues. Insurance also covers baggage loss up to $500 and trip interruption due to extraordinary circumstances.* Upon sign up you will also receive a full guide to health and safety in your country.

We recommend booking a doctor’s appointment a few months out to update your vaccinations, etc. or visiting a travel health clinic. Your doctor can recommend the appropriate vaccinations and travel medicine. Please see the Health and Safety page for more information.

Transportation and Flights

All volunteers will fly into Tokyo, Japan and will be met by a representative of ICYE Japan. United Planet, in coordination with ICYE Japan, arranges all airport transfers once you arrive in Japan and will ensure that you will arrive safely to your project.

Transportation to / from your project is generally easy. For some projects, host families will assist volunteers with their commute to the volunteering projects. Daily public transportation commuting costs will be covered by United Planet and ICYE Japan.
