Country Information
Home to 1.12 billion people, India is the second most populous nation in the world. The birthplace of both Hinduism and Buddhism as well as over 100 languages, it is fair to say India is the home of multiculturalism. Each of the country’s 28 states and seven territories also possesses its own unique cultural heritage. Although the economy is booming and the country is modernizing, you will experience many stark contrasts in India. Within the cities, you will see skyscrapers and shantytowns, and businessmen alongside beggars. In a country known for its bright engineers and global companies, it may surprise you that social issues such as poverty and illiteracy are still widespread.
