"My time in Iceland was magical. There is no other way to describe it, and even that word fails miserably. Sure, there were bumps along the way... But all of these things were just part of the adventure, and I wouldn't have traded any of them away." - Troy Porter, United Planet volunteer in Iceland |
United Planet and the ICYE Federation

Volunteer Opportunities in Iceland (6 or 12 months)
The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community. |
| Volunteer opportunities begin September and March of each year: 1) Social Projects – Volunteers work with people living with physical and mental disabilities where the goal is to give each person the opportunity for personal growth in a creative working environment. Volunteers work closely with local community members as well as with other participants in the project from different cultures and nationalities. It is a great chance to learn more about different ways of life while gaining insights into local societal challenges and solutions. 2) Drug Prevention Projects – Volunteers support local organizations which assist people addicted to alcohol and other substances. The project aims to help people to overcome their addiction and start a new life. It is not only a great opportunity to work with less fortunate people within a different cultural context, but also to give the people in the organization the chance to meet young foreign people. 3) Healthcare Projects – Volunteers work at a local clinic, which emphasizes the learning of preventive measures in order to avoid various illnesses and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Volunteers will always be in the role of an assistant at the clinic, tasks can range from work in the greenhouse and assisting in the kitchen to helping patients directly and working in the youth center. 4) Elderly Care Projects - Volunteers assist elderly citizens in a local organization. The main activities consist of building and maintaining the comfortable atmosphere of the institution and looking after the residents. The philosophy of the organization puts special emphasis on providing the best care for the residents and fulfilling the physical, social and spiritual needs of each individual. Volunteer Accommodations Volunteer accommodations vary according to project and location. Possible accommodations include home stays, shared housing with other volunteers or a room at the work placement. Are you interested in volunteering in Iceland?
