Volunteer in Honduras: 6 or 12 months

"In both Spanish and English I don't think the proper words exist to describe the acomplishment I feel for the work I have done and the love, gratitude, and appreciation of the people I met and families I stayed with."

- Jordan, United Planet volunteer

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.

Country Information

Honduras is located in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south.  It offers natural diversity and an array of activities including snorkeling in the crystal blue waters of the Bay Islands, visiting the legendary Mayan ruins of Copan, and zip-lining through the rain forest canopy.   In addition, Honduras offers volunteers a chance to experience a culturally diverse population and an intimate look at social challenges faced by Central American countries.   Volunteering in Honduras will provide you the chance of a lifetime to explore this beautiful country while giving back to the community.

Volunteer Opportunities in Honduras (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Social Projects - Volunteers can work in day care centers, organize sports recreation programs for children, or teach English. Volunteering in Honduras gives you the opportunity to play a crucial role in the lives of children who do not have the resources and attention they deserve.  Work with these children to encourage them to build confidence in their future.

2) Youth with Disabilities Projects – Volunteers have the opportunity to provide children with love, education and recreation. This experience is not only to help people living with mental and physical disabilities to feel useful in the society, but also to reveal their natural talents.

3) Healthcare Projects – Volunteers can work in a privately funded ward of a large public hospital in Tegucigalpa that helps children who are fighting cancer.  This experience provides an opportunity to spend time talking to and playing with the children who spend all day in their hospital beds.  The parents of the children also appreciate the conversation, smiles and support that the volunteers provide.

4) Education Projects – Volunteers have the opportunity to assist youth and children in rural schools. In addition to assisting teachers in the classroom and teaching English, this project also allows the volunteer to create an after-school program based on the volunteer’s skills (such as sports, music, art, etc).

Volunteer Accommodations

Volunteer accommodations vary according to project and location.  Possible accommodations include home stays, shared housing with other volunteers or a room at the work placement.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
