"I only have a few days left here in Ghana, and although I miss everyone at home, I am in no hurry to leave. I have learned a lot about life in Africa… my work with this school and orphanage has only just begun." - Emily Petrino, United Planet volunteer in Ghana |
United Planet and the ICYE Federation
| The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service. United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements. | ![]() |

Country Information
Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa and it was the first African country to gain its independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. Ghana’s economy remains one of the strongest in Western Africa, yet it is still one of poorest countries in the world. By volunteering in Ghana, you are not only involved in a project that addresses local problems and social issues, but you will also learn a lot about the culture and local languages while enjoying your time with the laid back and friendly people of Ghana.
