United Planet and the ICYE Federation
| The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service. United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements. | ![]() |

Germany “Deutschland” is the largest country in central Europe and a founding member of the European Union. Bordered by Denmark, Poland the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Holland, Germany is a great launching point for exploring much of Europe. After being divided for 55 years, the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR) joined in 1990 to become a united country once again. Germany is a country of beautiful landscapes with both the Baltic Sea and the North Sea to its north. It has numerous natural parks, mountains, valleys and lakes. Germany is often known for its complicated past, but volunteering with local communities will allow you to see that the people are focused on their vibrant future. |

Volunteer Opportunities in Germany (6 or 12 months)
The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community. |
| Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year: 1) Projects with Children – Volunteers work with children in kindergartens, day care centers or nurseries. It is a great opportunity to practice German! Tasks include creating activities or games for the children in addition to playing with and caring for them. This type of project also offers the chance experience many religious and cultural events. 2) Projects working with People with Disabilities - Volunteers work with physically and mentally disabled children. The center works with its members, empowering them by helping them become more self-sufficient, dispelling prejudices and providing activities for them that involve the local community. Volunteer tasks include taking care of the children - washing and feeding them, going for walks, cleaning, playing with them and other activities. 3) Projects working with the Elderly - Volunteers provide elderly individuals company, a conversation partner, a listening ear and assistance with getting around to various daily activities. This project gives you the chance to experience German culture from those who know it the best. 4) Social Projects - Volunteers assist in a local organization that works with youth who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. This project aims to provide their inhabitants with family-like surroundings, close contacts, as well as to advance their development and sense of security. Volunteers normally learn about and assist in various types of classes as well as assisting the residents with daily activities. Volunteer Accommodations Volunteers live with host families or in an apartment at the host placement. Are you interested in volunteering in Germany?
