Country Information
Germany, or Deutschland, is the largest country in central Europe and a founding member of the European Union. Bordered by Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, and Holland, Germany is a great launching point for exploring much of Europe. After being divided for 55 years the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR) joined together in 1990 to become a united country once again. Germany is a country of beautiful landscapes, including the Rhine and Danube Rivers and magical castles of Bavaria. It has numerous natural parks, mountains, valleys and lakes. Germany is often known for its complicated past, but volunteering in Germany with local communities will allow you to see that Germans are focused on their vibrant future. Attending a local cultural celebration such as Oktoberfest or Berlin’s Carnival of Cultures will show you that at heart, Germans know how come together to let their hair down, have a good time and laugh a lot! Proust!
