United Planet works closely with some unique healthcare opportunities in Ecuador. These include physical therapy, speech therapy, and rehabilitation projects. These projects are also open to those without a medical background.

Physical Therapy Quest
Minimum Stay: 1 week
Volunteers needed: Year Round
Requirements: At least 18 years old, Basic Spanish
 
With this Quest, take part in social health services that try to make a change in people's lives! This project is appropriate for physical therapy students and licensed professionals. Non professionals are also welcome. Volunteers will assist doctors prepping patients for their physical therapy. Volunteers may also have the chance to observe prosthetics being made for the patients. This is a good project for volunteers with a physical therapy background. Experienced therapists may have the opportunity to conduct workshops for the children's parents, helping to educate about the children's disabilities.
 

 

Education and Rehabilitation QuestEducation and Rehabilitation Quest: Working with Children with Mental Disabilities
Minimum Stay: 4 weeks
Volunteers needed: Year Round except August and September
Requirements: At least 18 years old, Basic Spanish
 
One of the social sectors of Ecuador that is most in need of assistance is services for people with disabilities. As a volunteer you have a great opportunity to help and support children with disabilities in order to help them develop their talents and potential. The aim of this project is to provide children and adolescents with mental disabilities with skills that will allow them to integrate into society. This will be accomplished through artistic activities and educational support. In this project volunteers can work as classroom and lunch service assistants. Volunteer work entails: helping with homework and class activities; monitoring students during class time; watching them during recreation times; assisting and supervising students during lunch. Volunteers may also help the children with speech by walking them through computer programs designed to improve their pronunciation. This is a good project for volunteers with a physical therapy background. Experienced therapists may have the opportunity to conduct workshops forparents, educating them about their children's disabilities. 
 

Speech Therapy Quest
Minimum Stay: 1 week
Volunteers needed: Year Round except July and August
Requirements: At least 18 years old, Basic Spanish
 
This quest takes place in a public institution that works with children who have hearing and visual disabilities. Every day, 40 kids between the ages of 3 months and 17 years old come to this institution and 12 children live there full-time with some of the staff members. In this project you will have the opportunity to assist the teachers with the daily activities for the students, learn sign language and Braille and specially, help with speech therapy. The organization has also initiated workshops in arts, crafts, and baking. This institution is a beautiful place with lots of space and green areas for children to learn and play.
