Denmark Volunteer Quest
Volunteer in Denmark: 6 or 12 months

“This experience is not to be missed and I wish a lot of luck and good will to all those who do it.  Go with a very open mind, be ready for anything and you won't be disappointed!"

– Florence Pritchard, United Planet volunteer in Denmark

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.   ICYE logo

Country Information

Denmark is located in the north of Europe.  Although only about 43,000 square km in size, it serves as the connecting point between North and Central Europe now that the bridge between Denmark and Sweden has been completed.  Denmark is the second-most visited destination in Scandinavia. Volunteering in Denmark is a great opportunity to explore all of the sites and culture that this incredible country has to offer including lively cities, Viking ruins, medieval castles and a rural countryside.  Beyond your explorations, volunteering in a local community will give you unique insight into the Danish local way of life.

Volunteer Opportunities in Denmark (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Projects with the Elderly – Volunteers work in residential home, helping to take care of the elderly who live there. Many of the residents are physically or mentally weak and are nursed by professional staff. Volunteer tasks include assisting the occupational therapist in instructing the elderly in various kinds of handiwork/crafts. This type of project normally requires basic Danish.

2) Projects with People with Disabilities - Volunteers work with physically and mentally disabled individuals in local centers.  Many people living with disabilities in Denmark require support and assistance. While volunteer work can vary, typical tasks often include assisting them with schoolwork and with their everyday activities and being a friend to them.  It can be a demanding job, but it is definitely and cheerful and rewarding experience.

3) Education Projects – Volunteers assist a high school teacher in the volunteer’s native tongue, usually Spanish, English or French.  Volunteers serve as conversation partners and tutors for the students while learning about the Danish education system and classroom.

4) Projects with Children – Volunteers assist in nurseries (children ages 0-3), kindergartens (ages 3-6) or afte--school activity centers (children ages 6-14). Working with children from ages 0-6, volunteers can play with the children and do some practical work. Similar duties exist when working with children from age 6-14, but since they are school children, volunteers can also help the children with their homework.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
