"I love Costa Rica...what a beautiful sense of lifestyle! My volunteer work is incredible, the children are amazing."

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.

Country Information

Costa Rica, Spanish for "Rich Coast," can boast environmental diversity and beauty unlike any other!  Beaches, rivers, jungles and more await exploration!  This small country is a terrific example of eco-tourism as about one quarter of its land is protected by the government.  Costa Rica, which does not have an army, is often viewed as an example of political stability in Central America.  However with a population of 4 million, there are still social problems to be addressed. Volunteers have many opportunities to assist local NGOs, care centers for elderly, schools, or even work in a zoo.   You can share your skills and enthusiasm with the warm Ticos while discovering this incredible country of Costa Rica! Pura Vida!

Volunteer Opportunities in Costa Rica (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Social Projects – Volunteers will learn firsthand about the educational system in Costa Rica through classroom placements in kindergartens and primary schools.  The work consists of supporting the teachers with activities and classes, as well as playing with the kids. Volunteers also help in the administration's office, with specific responsibilities being defined with the school staff.

2) Environment Projects - Volunteers assist in the conservation of wildlife, such as various species of plants, birds, invertebrates, or primates. The objective is to protect endangered species and reintroduce them to the wild. Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to: observing and taking notes on animal behavior and helping to maintain the gardens and trails of the National Parks and Reserves.

3) Work with the Elderly - Volunteers work at an association dedicated to supporting the elderly by giving them a space to stay active and have a meaningful place in society. The association does so by organizing various workshops and activities for them. Volunteers can help in the planning process and running activities, as well as assisting in the central office. Occasionally the volunteers also have the opportunity to do outreach in outlying communities.

Volunteer Accommodations

Most volunteers live with host families, but accommodations may vary according to the assigned project.  Other possible accommodations include shared housing with other volunteers or a room at the work placement.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
