Country Information

While a turbulent dictatorship and devastating genocide cast a long shadow over Cambodia’s history, the country has recently begun to heal and overcome its dark past.  Now that peace has been restored, Cambodia is emerging as a tranquil tourist destination full of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and delicious cuisine. However, Cambodia is still one of the poorest countries in Asia, with around 80% of the population employed in subsistence farming and some of the highest infant mortality rates in the region. A poor healthcare system also results in a growing orphan population and higher death rates from diseases such as AIDS . Yet Cambodia has much to offer the visitor, with an ancient and fascinating culture, religion and history, the remains of which are visible today! These remains includes the famous Angkor Wat Temple complex near Siem Reap, built between 800-1100 AD. Siem Reap itself is now considered a world famous spiritual retreat where visitors come to rest up and indulge in its fine hotels, boutiques and restaurants, away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Cambodia.
