Bolivia Volunteer Quest
Volunteer in Bolivia: 6 or 12 months

2 boys

"Everything about my Quest was amazing. The minute I arrived, I became immersed in everything... From the people who took me in as though I were family, to the overwhelming historical culture that was everywhere. Even though I was U.S. American, I became one of them and am eternally grateful to everyone who made my experience possible, especially United Planet."

- Marissa, United Planet volunteer in Bolivia

United Planet and the ICYE Federation

The International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is an international non-profit youth exchange organization promoting intercultural learning and international voluntary service.  United Planet represents the U.S. and Canada as an associate member of the ICYE Federation which was founded after World War II as part of a reconciliation program between the U.S. and Germany. Today there are over 30 country members of the ICYE Federation who work in partnership to exchange volunteers for 6 months and 1 year placements.

Country Information

Bolivia is located to the southwest of Brazil on the continent of South America.  Its diverse landscape lends itself to diverse climates where it can be humid and tropical in some areas while cold and arid in others.  The rugged Andes mountains guide the eyes of travelers upward while the plains of the Amazon basin pulls the travelers' attention in a different direction.  The majority of the population is indigenous (primarily Quechua and Aymara) which results a fascinating and unique culture.  Volunteering in Bolivia provides the opportunity to enjoy the rich local culture while assisting a local community with pressing issues.

Volunteer Opportunities in Bolivia (6 or 12 months)

The purpose of this Quest is to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding through meaningful volunteer work at local organizations and immersion in the host community.

Volunteer opportunities begin August and January of each year:

1) Social Projects – Volunteers work with children who live on the street. Tasks include taking care of the children, helping with homework and playing games.  The goal of these organizations is to further these children’s education and personal development.

2) Development Projects - Volunteers are involved in the assistance and training for small businesses, mainly dealing with the development of technical, financial, educational and health programs. Tasks can range from translating documents to delivering workshops on small business and various development issues.

3) Human Rights Projects - This volunteer work consists of assisting with local non-profit organizations doing a mixture of text translation and general office support, with some travel. These projects usually require an intermediate level of Spanish.  The organizations vary in targeting human rights infringements in areas such as racism, women’s rights, gay & lesbian rights, children’s rights and Indigenous Community Development.

4) Health Project– This project aims to promote healthy living among low-income families. Volunteers may work in hospitals or drug rehabilitation centers with men, women or children. This project requires that the volunteers have a certain level of knowledge or experience in this area, or that their future motivations are work in this field.

5) Environmental Projects – Volunteers work with local NGOs to develop programs related to ecotourism. Volunteers are not only involved in the protection and care of the environment, but also assist with workshops that are organized to educate the local communities about healthy care of their environment.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our volunteer program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations

Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit the nearest travel clinic several months prior to departure.

Living and volunteering abroad, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
