Volunteer in Africa
Volunteer Abroad in Africa: 2-52 Weeks

elephant   children   landscape tanzania

United Planet’s unique Volunteer Abroad Quest program combines volunteering abroad, language learning, cultural activities, interesting excursions, and more to provide an incredibly fulfilling experience for volunteers and valuable support for local communities worldwide.

Volunteers of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds are invited to join from 2-52 weeks in six different countries to volunteer abroad in Africa. Volunteer opportunities range from teaching to orphanage work, social development projects and construction.

“Every day I would work at the local orphanage, taking care of the babies, talking with the elderly, and entertaining the disabled...Talking to these people (mostly the elderly who knew English) and the staff really inspired me. The stories I heard and the experiences I learned that these people had been through made me realize how fortunate I really am. Each day I would go to work, and each day I would leave feeling luckier; not wanting to take things for granted.”

United Planet Short-term Quests (1-12 Weeks Year-Round)

Africa never ceases to amaze volunteers; be it for the warm, friendly hosts who greet them, or the stories they hear from locals at their projects. In rural Ghana, United Planet volunteers become an integral part of village life while teaching English to local children. As temporary denizens of bustling Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, volunteers teach computer literacy skills to adults, ride dala-dalas through local markets, and take a weekend to relax on the beaches of Zanzibar. These are just a few examples of what a United Planet Quest may entail.

United Planet offers two countries in Africa for short-term volunteer opportunities. Quest programs include orphanage work, teaching, social development work and more. Volunteers support community development through placements at local organizations and schools. Please visit the individual country pages for more details on projects offered in each location.

Please note that volunteers must be at least 18 yrs of age to join a Short-term Quest to Africa, unless accompanied by an adult.

United Planet Long-term Quests (Jan or Aug 2009 Start Date)

Are you planning to take some time off next semester or next fall? Taking a gap year before starting college? The long-term programs offered to U.S. and Canadian citizens through United Planet’s partner organization ICYE afford you the ability to volunteer for six months or one year in five different countries in Africa. Volunteers support community development through placements at local organizations, clinics and schools. Project placements vary by country. Please visit Long-Term Quest page for more details on projects offered in each location.

Please note that volunteers must be at least 18 years of age to join a Long-term Quest; age requirements also vary by country.
