The United Kingdom, or UK, is made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island, all islands in between the northern Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. The UK’s history is rich and diverse – from mysterious Stonehenge, to Roman rule and Arthurian legend – this history has long captivated the imagination. After World War II, as the British Empire began to collapse, the UK united and built itself into the modern and prosperous nation it is today. Cool, rainy temperatures year-round characterize the moderate climate here. As a volunteer, you will get to experience life from a local’s perspective while working with those who find themselves on the fringes of society.
United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in the United Kingdom, you will be hosted by ICYE UK, ICYE’s partner organization there. Staff at ICYE UK host up to 50 volunteers year-round for a variety of community programs.
Volunteers work in homes or centers that provide care and activities for youth and adults living with physical or mental disabilities. The work includes a combination of direct care and organizing leisure and educational activities.
Volunteers work with teenagers from low-income or troubled families in community projects and camps. Volunteers are exposed to a variety of educational activities that provide the children with positive multicultural activities related to sports and the outdoors. The projects may be in the form of outdoor camps or community centers.
Volunteers work at an outdoor ranch, camp, or training facility that promotes the personal development of the local community. Activities in the project may range from tennis, swimming, and fencing to team building activities such as climbing, and tight ropes. Volunteers are expected to work outdoors, assisting with activities, as well as indoors, supporting administrative activities as needed.

We want you to succeed. That means having in place the support our volunteers need. We don't just drop you in country and hope for the best. We provide training before you leave … language exposure … 24/7 in-country support … support for your host family … accommodations, meals and airport transportation … activities and excursions. The whole idea is to make the experience successful and productive for you and the host community, and we have found that these things are crucial. Remember that we are a non-profit, mission-driven organization – we wouldn’t spend money on something that wasn’t important.
