In memory of Denzin Nyima - United Planet's Tibet CoordinatorIt is with deep sadness that United Planet reports the death of Denzin Nyima, our Tibet Coordinator. Denzin was the creator of our Tibet Quest and we are grateful for his commitment to enhancing cross-cultural understanding while supporting projects in his home community. Denzin studied for his BA degree from Qinghai Normal University in English Training, an Associates Degree from Qinghai Nationalities Institute in Tibetan History and Culture, and a Zhong Zhuan Degree from Yushu Nationalities Teacher's School in Teaching Methodology. Denzin worked as a Tibetan Culture Teacher, Mathematics Teacher, Supervisor at the Yushu Orphanage School, and a Project Evaluator for the Canada Fund. He spoke three languages fluently: Tibetan (Kham, Amdo, and Lhasa dialects), Chinese (Qinghai dialect and Mandarin Chinese), and English. Denzin Nyima was the president of a newly set up non profit organization which compose of 50 local members ranges from non profit local community, the vice headmaster of Tibetan and English Training Center of Yushu Prefecture. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling to various Tibetan regions and time with his family in the Jyekundo (Yushu) area. Such activity allowed him to become an integral part in the community. He helped to facilitate much of the volunteer work performed by foreign doctors and organizations In Yushu. While traveling, Denzin always had his camera ready for those ever-elusive memories of his friends and colleagues, and of course for his favorite subjects, mountain goats. Our Quest Director is currently in Tibet working to continue the program under the leadership of Denzin's family. Denzin will be missed by all at United Planet. Travel to Jyekundo ("Yushu") and Accommodation To get to Yushu volunteers have to travel to Xining, China via Beijing or Shanghai. From Xining, volunteers take an overnight bus to Jyekundo (Yushu). The bus ride is about 16 hours. In cases where volunteers arrive after the bus has departed, volunteers will stay overnight in a local hotel in Xining. Once they arrive in Jyekundo, volunteers will stay with a Tibetan host family.
