Tanzania Quest Details

ACCOMMODATIONS & FOOD
Volunteers will stay at a hostel in Dar es Salaam the first night and have an orientation the next day. After that, volunteers will move in with their host family who will provide three Tanzanian meals per day. During the week, the host family can help you to pack a lunch, or you can buy something yourself near the volunteer site for lunch. If you take independent trips on the weekends, you have to buy meals during the trips.

Families volunteering will be accomodated in a homestay if a local family has two rooms available. Otherwise, families will stay in a hostel arrangement. There may be an added charge for this arrangement. The hostel has security with a 24 hour guard and is in a safe neighborhood. Hot water and electricity are available and a maid will prepare your meals, or you can prepare your own.

*Evaluation Refund: Your feedback is very important to us! Upon receiving your on-line evaluation within one month of the completion of your Quest, you will be refunded $50. You also have the option to support United Planet's Country Funds which support program development and development projects in the communities where our volunteers work. Instead of receiving your $50 refund, you may choose to donate that $50 to the Country Fund where you participated in your Quest. Family Evaluation Refund: UP will only refundone survey per family.

Zanzibar
Zanzibar is an archipelago 25 miles off the coast of Tanzania. It is a beautiful island with pristine beaches and a laid-back lifestyle. The local people are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of its colorful history. Islam is the dominant religion, as can be seen in the bright coverings worn by many women.


Spice Tour
Since the abolition of the slave trade, spices have been at the heart of Zanzibar enterprise. Indeed no trip to Zanzibar could be considered complete without a visit to one of the carefully selected spice farms. The spice tour offers you the opportunity to indulge your senses with a kaleidoscope of smells, fastes and textures.It also provides you with the unique opportunity to purchase those exclusive spices straight from the source.

Once you arrive in Zanzibar, you may decide to participate in these optional excursions, at your own cost.

Jozan Forest
(Full day)
Jozani Forest despite being one of the last remaining ground water forests boasts a rich diversity of natural endowment, including swamp forest, evergreen thicket and mangrove. Red colobus and Sykes monkeys can be seen fooling amongst the exotic indigenous and non indigenous flora.
Price: $20 per person Time: 2 – 3 hours
Package: Entry fee $8, transport $12 + Guide

No lunch is provided.

Kizimkazi dolphin tour
Full day(1+30 hr dive)
Kizimkazi nestles snugly on the Southern tip of the Island; it offers idyllic coastal views that are in marked contrast to those the forest. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are regular guests and frequently seen. A traditional Zanzibari lunch overlooking the sea allows guests to take in the breathtaking scenery whilst gathering strength for the snorkeling in the afternoon.

Stone town city tour
(Half day)
Come and join our experienced guides as they show you the historic charms of old stone town with visits to;
Town market, slave market, national museum, high court, slave chambers, old German consulate, former English gentleman’s club, tip tip house, house of wonders, old fort, sultan’s Palace, Livingstone House and many more.
Time: 3 – 4 hours
Price: $20 per person

Nungwi cultural tour
(Half/ Full Day)
This tour gives you the wonderful opportunity to experience some of the traditions abundant in Zanzibar. Dhows (rigged marine vessels) have been constructed using the same methods and ingenious use of available raw materials. This tour incorporates a visit to Mkokotoni where one can see these practices still in use today.
This trip also includes visits to Fukuchani Portuguese ruins, a local fishing village to sample local life, a traditional blacksmith, a natural tidal aquarium and plenty of free time to enjoy the beautiful white beaches.

Special Note

It is strongly advised that you discuss your travel plans with a healthcare provider, and you are vaccinated and get Malaria pills. Health and Safety are your top priorities. Take them seriously, and be knowledgeable by reading notices issued by the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. State Departments.
