Whilst no knowledge of Romanian is required it is always useful to know the basics before you come, there are very few people in the villages who understand English. The villagers and staff will always make a real effort to understand, and there is generally always someone around that will be able to translate for you if there is a need. It is also possible to take some Romanian lessons whilst you are here on request.
Travel:
Volunteers will fly into Otopeni Airport (Bucharest) and from there will be collected by a United Planet resprentative and driven to the organization which is approximately 2 1/2 hours drive. Please note that all volunteers must arrive on a Monday between 9am-10pm. Volunteers that arrive after 10pm at night and departure before 9am in the morning, will need to make arrangements to stay in Bucharest overnight.
Accommodations:
The volunteer accommodation is based in an independent house within the organization and has the benefit of being on site. The accommodation consists of rooms, with en-suite shower and toilet; most rooms also have a balcony. There is a communal kitchen and dining room as well as patio area which in the summer is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. All meals will be served in the volunteer house or on occasion with the children in their dining room. The volunteer house gives volunteers the chance to meet other volunteers who they may not be working with directly and to interact socially with other guests.
Food
Meals will either be at the volunteer accommodation or with the children. We also request the volunteers help with the preparation and clearing up of meals as this frees up our staff to do their allocated jobs.
Weather
Romanian summers are warm and long, however even in summer due to out location the evening can be a little cool. The winters can be especially harsh sometime reaching temperatures as low as -20 degrees centigrade.
Wish List
The children are in constant need of items such as shoes, school equipment, rain coats, school bags, art supplies, notepads, etc. The orphanage also needs tools, both electrical and mechanical, saws and gardeniing tools, as well as money to finish six more buildings that are in construction and pay the salaries of the nurses, teachers, caretakers, and cooks, buy food, and pay electricity bills.
