Japan Details

Housing Japan
Volunteers will stay with a host family in Chiba with two Japanese meals provided each day.

Travel
Volunteers will be met by the in-country coordinator upon their arrival at Narita International Airport, just outside of Tokyo. At the end of the program the coordinator or host-family will facilitate their return to Narita.

Cultural activities
Volunteers will take Japanese lessons and participate in other exciting cultural activities (e.g. flower arrangement, tea ceremony).

Excursions
Volunteers can choose from the following destinations.
1. Historical and cultural districts in Tokyo (Asakusa and Ueno)
2. Downtown area in Tokyo (Harajuku, Shibuya, and Sinjuku)
3. Downtown area in Tokyo (Ginza) and Tsukiji fish market
4. Hiking at Mt. Takao (near Tokyo)
5. Kamakura, a historical city nearby Tokyo


Start Date/s: 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month
Please note: all applications and deposits should be sent at least 60 days prior to your departure date.
The program is available year round except the following period:
- From mid-February to mid-March, 2007

Special Family Rates:
-1st parent:full quest fee
-2nd parent:10% off of 1 full quest fee
-children under 12: 50% off the full quest fee
-children 12 and over: 10% off the full quest fee
-couples: receive 10% off of 1 full quest fee


*Evaluation Refund: Your feedback is very important to us! Upon receiving your on-line evaluation within one month of the completion of your Quest, you will be refunded $50. You also have the option to support United Planet's Country Funds which support program development and development projects in the communities where our volunteers work. Instead of receiving your $50 refund, you may choose to donate that $50 to the Country Fund where you participated in your Quest. Family Evaluation Refund: UP will only refundone survey per family.

  • Language Lessons: 1 to 2 hours per week of Japanese lessons. Additional lessons can be arranged.

  • Excursions: See above (please note that $20 extra charge is required for Kamakura).

Not Included:

  • Lunch
  • Commute from host family to volunteer site
