Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities in China:

United Planet offers ongoing volunteer Quest opportunities in China that begin on the second Saturday of each month. 

As a volunteer interested in a meaningful journey to China, wouldn't you love to broaden your horizon of knowledge about the rich Chinese culture as you lend a helping hand?

We are here to provide you a special opportunity to have an in-depth cultural exchange experience, sharing your willingness to learn about and understand the lives of the native people of ChengDu, and to share your ideas and your passions with them, developing long- lasting friendships.

Here is how you can have an in-depth and inter-personal cultural exchange experience through ChinaQuest:

Volunteer Opportunities
1. English Teacher Assistance
You will be aiding professors from the language department at a sports University in Cheng Du to work with either a class of college level students or with an individual student on a daily basis to help them improve their English skills.  Many of the students majoring in English have never had a chance to speak with native English speakers before coming to college; and  your being there and conversing with them is extremely crucial to improve their conversational English. We guarantee that you will have a great learning experience about the Chinese culture through conversing and sharing knowledge with the students of ChengDu.

2. Sports and Physical Therapy
You will aid doctors who attend to members of the university's Gymnastics team who might be injured during trainings. You will also help them with muscle relaxation prior to their practices. This is a great experience forthose who enjoy working with children; and it is a special opportunity to view live performances of the gymnasts who will potentially compete in the Olympics.

Live with a Host Family
Living with a local family gives you a deeper insight into the lives of the local people. Professor Nie has been a great Quest Coordinator as well as a thoughtful host for our volunteers."Professor Nie might be one of the nicest and most accommodating men I have ever met" (Lance, UP Volunteer).
(For an added fee, volunteers have the option to live in the "International Hotel" located on the campus of ChengDu Sports University instead of with a host family.)

Historical Excursions
The capital city of SiChuan province, ChengDu, is known as the “Land of Abundance”. With over 2,300 years of history, ChengDu is one of many famous historical and cultural cities in China. Its people have always been creative and intelligent and it has been the mother to many inventions in the world. ChengDu is located in a basin, surrounded by mountains in all directions, yet despite its geographical isolation, ChengDu has brought its creations to the outside world.
 * The Ancestral Temple of Marquis Wu (Wu Hou Ci) -it was first built in the sixth century, next to the ancestral temple of Liu Bei, who was the king of Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280).  This is one of the must-see-sites in ChengDu, and it is located only 2 minutes walking distance from ChengDu Sports University. 
 * The Green Ramp Temple: A Daoist temple  
 * The old home of the "Poet God" Li Bai" and the "Poet Sage" Du Fu 
* San Xing Dui Museum - the name San Xing Dui is given to this previously unknown Bronze Age culture; and the Musuem displays artifacts that are radiocarbon dated circa 12th-11th centuries BCE
* Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries - here visitors can see or take pictures with the most adorable, energetic, playful, and photogenic pandas.

Volunteer requirements:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be native English speakers. A basic level of Chinese is a bonus, but is not required.

1-4 WEEKS PROGRAM:
All projects last from 1 to 4 weeks, commencing on the second Saturday of each month and ending on a Saturday. Upon your arrival at the ChengDu airport, a representative of United Planet will meet you.
International flights are available from Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. Domestic flights are available from various Chinese airports.

Visas
United Planet sends volunteers from many countries around the world. Obtaining a Visa (if necessary) is therefore the responsibility of the volunteer. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the U.S. State Department to learn more about foreign entry requirements. For citizens of all other countries, please contact your destination country's embassy in your home country or your government website. If you need a letter from United Planet to verify your participation in our program, please e-mail us with this request and we will be happy to provide one.

Health Issues and Vaccinations
Some countries require or suggest that volunteers have certain vaccinations before entering the country.  Please consult your country's government website for more information regarding the health of travelers. U.S. citizens can visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control to learn more about vaccinations and staying healthy while traveling.  It is also recommended that you visit nearest travel clinic prior to departure.

Living and volunteering in another country, often in conditions you are not used to, can take a toll on the body and mind.  In addition to the information that is provided in your pre-departure package, please research how to stay healthy in your country of destination.  It could make all the difference!
