TRANSFERS Volunteers will be riding on Santiago public transport, buses and the metro, to their site from their host family. City transportation is not expensive, but it is volunteers’ own expense. For example, volunteers working at a public school or a daycare center may have to take a 70 minute bus ride (just one bus). It costs US$.80 (80 cents) one way. Public transport is safe during the day taking normal precautions, but volunteers should not use it at night. Volunteers will finish their work day by 5 pm to get home in daylight. Please note: all applications and deposits should be sent at least 60 days prior to your departure date. Important Notice: Volunteers can not change their volunteer activity or their home stay family once they are in Chile. Dependent children under age 18 (including the children of divorced parents) who are traveling alone, with one parent, or in someone else's custody, must present a notarized document certifying that both parents agree to their travel before the child will be allowed to exit Chile. This document must be notarized before a Chilean consular officer in the United States. You can download the notary and the direction of the legalization of parental consent.
