Featured Volunteer: Hannah Harman

Peru Quest, January 22 - April 29, 2007

Elephant RideHannah Harman spent three months in Peru this year teaching English and helping out in schools and youth centers. During most of her Quest, Hannah worked at Hogar Jesus Mi Luz in Cusco (see collage below) teaching about 50 boys. Although Hannah worked full-time during her trip, she still got the opportunity to go to a large international soccer game, try many new foods, see several of the ruins around Cusco, visit the countryside, and learn many things about Peruvian culture. She also saw Lake Titicaca and its incredible man-made floating islands, backpacked for four days to Machu Picchu, went horseback riding, and crawled through the Inca tunnels, among other things.

This is the first time that Hannah traveled abroad or went on a trip alone. "It was amazing, I became more independent and more confident about building relationships with people," she says. She also believes that she rediscovered her passion for working with children and gained a more well-rounded perspective of Peruvian culture. She was touched most by the hospitality and love of her host mother and her relationships with the 52 young boys that she worked with. She gained many great and unique memories while on her Quest, which you can read about in her emails from Peru!
