How was the in-country support?

My in-country coordinator, Akos, was great! She was supportive, knowledgeable, and always made herself available to myself and the other volunteers. She would even bring us food and snacks whenever she came, giving us a nice break from the sometimes repetitive host family food. I felt comfortable going to her with any questions or concerns I had.

What did you enjoy most about your Quest experience?

While there were many great things about my Quest, I would say that the most enjoyable aspect of my experience was playing games and reading books with the local village children. They were kind, smart, and so adorable! Being able to interact them outside of the classroom allowed me to become not only their teacher, but role model and friend.

What was most challenging about your Quest experience?

The difficulty of teaching and overcoming some language barrier issues with my class was the most challenging aspect of my Quest. However, it was by far, the most rewarding.

Describe your volunteer work experience.

I began teaching math with junior high school students, but that evolved into me teaching math, science, and English. The students were very receptive and eager to learn.

Tell us how you feel overall about your experience.

Before arriving in Ghana, I had no idea that I was about to embark on the most profound experience of my life. Teaching the children in the village of Biakpa gave me a greater sense of purpose, but learning from them gave me a greater sense of identity and personhood.

I went to Ghana as a volunteer seeking an eye-opening experience, but I left with a new family, friends, and global perspective. This experience has showed me that Ghana is not only a beautiful place that is rich with culture, but that it has wonderful people. Knowing that I was a part of a force that evokes positive change in the world has empowered me, and I will cherish all the memories I have made during this great experience. The cultural experience was amazing. Living amongst the locals, adapting to their lifestyle and the overall cultural shift was an unforgettable experience.
